Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea , which causes distortions in vision (astigmatism), difficulty with light and halo effect, and a gradual weakening of corneal layers.
The earlier the diagnosis of Keratoconus is made, the more easily the deterioration of the cornea, and vision loss can be treated.
What causes Keratoconus?
We do not know what causes keratoconus, but it is likely genetic and environment factors are involved. Around 1 in 10 people with keratoconus will also have a parent with keratoconus.
Keratoconus can be associated with certain risk factors:
Symptoms of keratoconus may change as the disease progresses and include:
Initial potential diagnosis is during a routine eye examination. A full, comprehensive diagnosis will be with Dr. Alejandro Guerra Garcia the ophthalmic surgeon experienced in Keratoconus.
The optometrist will diagnose Keratoconus in a full comprehensive eye examination by careful use of the retinoscope. This can be fully confirmed by a complete examination on the Corneal topographer.
A full examination on the Corneal Topographer, at Vision Express Medical, will indicate damage to the cornea, and determine the level of treatment required.
